The third and final chapter of “girLand,” Held in Faerie, reclaims the darker origins of folklore to examine the ways femininity has historically been constructed, performed, and controlled. Drawing from early fairy tales and the traditional symbolism of hair in shoes, the collection explores the connection and ties to our current view of women and the children we raise.
Through sculptural, handcrafted forms, the work balances seduction and unease, creating silhouettes that feel whimsical yet quietly unsettling. Resin, leather, exaggerated proportion, and ornamental detailing are used to construct a world suspended between fantasy and reality. A world, the world, where women exist simultaneously as object and subject.
As the concluding body of work within girLand, Held in Faerie unites the emotional memory of Elegy of Use and the experimental material language of Forms of Play. Together, the three collections explore the feminine psyche through recollection, transformation, and the tension between beauty, performance, and identity.
